This would have to be one of my favorite spots to hit up when looking for a change of scenery and an escape from the hustle and bustle. It's huge, well signposted, beautifully green and in the summer, bustling with activity!
You'll find below my personal pick of activities (in no particular order) of what to do when checking out The Amsterdam Woods.
1. You Can Hire a Canoe or Boat
This is a perfect activity to do with friends and family on a sunny day with accessible rivers and streams throughout the entire woods. Here is a link to their website where you can check out prices and opening hours.
2. There's a Goat Farm
If goats amuse you as much as they do me, then I suggest you head down to the goat farm and check out these little fella's. It's free entry and there's a cafe there too if you'd like something to eat or drink.
3. And Many Festivals
It's not uncommon for there to be in the summer a festival here every weekend. Pictured above is an epic trance one called Electronic family which is guaranteed to blow your mind. The Dutch know how to party.
4. It's Bike Friendly
The entire woods is criss-crossed with easygoing, seemingly endless bike paths. They're well signposted so you shouldn't get lost! Bring a backpack with some food and something to smoke and make a day of it.
5. You Can Camp Here
There are a few campsites in the woods that make for an easy getaway from the city if you're in need of a little chill time. You'll find here a link to my favorite one for prices and camping options.
6. There's a New Water Course
And this one's not just for the kids! Some friends and I had a killer time mid-winter, fully clothed navigating our way above the icy water below. Best to check this one out in Summer when you can get wet.
7. You Can Get Naked
There is a special area in Amsterdamse Bos set apart for the sunbathing without any clothes on. It has been located on the covered by tree grass land called Zonneweide located not far from De Amstelveense Poel lake.
8. Find the Open Air Theater
There is nothing better for a theater lover than to see Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a theater in the middle of the forest, with hundreds of other spectators. We advise to take with you a blanket, a bottle of wine and a bite to eat. You can find info on upcoming performances here.
How To Get There
Het Amsterdamse Bos is less than 4km from Amsterdam. There are convenient bicycle lanes created on both sides of the road. You should go there via Amstelveenseweg, in the southwest of the city and on the first big crossing in Amstelveen turn right to the park.
From the Central Station lines 170 and 172, from the RAI station – lines 66 and 199.
