Amsterdam is a step ahead of many in it's pursuit of happy healthy residents, a great example of this is its outdoor fitness equipment initiatives. Located in every park I've stumbled across so far, lays equipment to get your pump on. It's free, provides for a full body work out and allows you to work out among the birds and the trees.
You'll find at most locations : a bench press, back extension, fly's machine, bi's machine, shoulders, leg extension and dips and pull ups bars. And if creative, most of the equipment can be adapted to work every muscle in your body (I've seen the fly's machine be adapted as a hamstring curls machine and the back extension for squats).
In typical Netherlands fashion, the weather doesn't always permit a workout. When raining the equipment is a little too slippery to use. But aside from that, there are no opening/closing times. No mirrors. No receptionist. No top forty music. And no bullshit. This is generally a no frills 'beast-mode' workout.
So if you're looking to offset any typical unclean Amsterdam behavior, want to get your pump on for the ladies, are looking for some fresh air or maybe want to meet some locals; then head down to a park closest to you and give this gear a go!
- Dress accordingly. When it's really cold, you may want gloves.
- Remember to bring a water bottle
- Bring a bluetooth speaker or your music device and headphones
