As a year-long expat in Amsterdam, a host of many guests to the city and an avid smoker, the most frequently asked question I receive by far is "which are the best coffeeshops to visit?". What you'll find below are reviews of the five of the best coffeeshops, where they're located and when they're open. Happy smoking.
These coffeeshops were selected via vote by the members of popular Amsterdam facebook forum Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory, and then visited by myself for "quality control" during a few very hazy days.
1. 1e Hulp
This coffeeshop based in Amsterdam is considered one of the best by many locals and expats alike. The shop is run by two friends, who are pretty conscious of quality and a customer friendly approach (two important things that many coffeeshops lack). Next to a good selection of products to smoke they serve a large selection of drinks, Moroccan tea and coffee. 1e Hulp is one of those quaint little places outside of the main tourist trap zone not often stumbled upon - unless by word-of mouth - that you can spend a whole afternoon in chilling and laughing. Try their Moon Rocks, buds coated in oil and hash. They don't come cheap (at forty euros per gram) but if you want to get smashed then these are a safe bet.
This coffeeshop has a very modern interior and great weed menu, complemented by Lovely canal view of Oud West houseboats. My first impression had me thin
Boerejongens has a great menu, both bio and hydro, with at least 15-20 popular strains. A lot of Dutch people I know are big fans of this coffeeshop and although the name is not mentioned as much as some others, when it is, it's always a good thing. This place is more of a take-away shop than a sit-in-and smoke so it's not that cozy; but it's clean, the staff are young and friendly and I'll certainly be back!
The menu is not too diverse but there is a decent selection of good bud. I tried the best White Russian I've had for a long time, a very nice find for twelve euros.
they have an upstairs smoking area with quite a few tables so this is a great place to bring your friends. One of the biggest draw factors here is its location. It's very central and close to a multitude of hostels and hotels. The shop was clean, had a lot of local traffic (a good sign) and is run professionally.
Just a skip away from Centraal Station, this coffeeshop is stupidly convenient for the visitor and offers a great variety of people to mix with. These guys do a killer five gram "power bag" of mixed nugs for twenty euros which is in my 12 months here certainly the best deal I've come across. You're not going to get well manicured skunk but it's still good. As a bonus, there is a low budget hotel right above the hotel if you cant bear to be more than ten feet away from a coffeeshop. The smoking area is quite small so I'd advise against coming here with large groups.
This is definitely one of the better coffeeshops of Amsterdam. Besides a great atmosphere, amazing music and the best vaporizer available. They offer a great variety of both buds and hash, most of them being killer. If you're looking for maximum bang-for-buck, definitely check out their 5gms Haze Shake for 20 euros. There was plenty of space for my friends and I nestled among retro photos, bongs and colorful murals. This is a little gem that most people find out about by word of mouth. It's a little away from the city center (about a 10 minute bike or 25 minute walk), which keeps the place free from swarms of tourists.
Let me know in the comments below if I've missed out your favorite coffeeshop and I'll be sure to check it out. Happy smoking.
Peace - M
